Exercise against dementia – with the InCoPE-App

Providing innovative and practical support in everyday care.

Ongoing project - open for funding

InCoPE (Individualized Cognitive and Physical Exercise) is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating individualized exercise programs for people with dementia. Supporting the InCoPE-App enables you to help integrate innovative physical activity programs into the care of people with dementia.

This is what it's all about

Exercise is medicine – especially for dementia

Physical activity is a promising, non-pharmacological approach to treating dementia. Studies show that physical activity improves cognitive and physical performance, mobility, and quality of life, as well as the ability to perform everyday activities. It is particularly important to promote physical activity in care facilities, where residents spend up to 90% of their day sitting. Digital solutions like the InCoPE-App can create new opportunities here – provided they are easily accessible, practical, and sustainable. This is precisely our goal.

What we want to achieve

Following the successful completion of an 18-week pilot phase in six care facilities, which received consistently positive feedback from nursing staff and showed initial promising effects among participants, the focus is now on the next phase:

1. Scientific Evaluation
A large-scale, controlled study will scientifically demonstrate the efficacy and effectiveness of the InCoPE-App, thus laying the groundwork for broader implementation and potential support from health insurance companies. This will lay the foundation for sustainable integration into the care of people with dementia. The study will focus on:

  • Improvements in cognitive and physical abilities
  • Maintenance and promotion of the performance of activities of daily living (ADL
  • Relief for nursing staff
  • Acceptance and feasibility in everyday nursing care
2. Further development of the app in the spirit of a user-centered design
Based on practical experience and feedback, the InCoPE-App will be further developed in order to:

  • Optimize usability
  • Better address the requirements of everyday nursing care
  • Create a basis for dissemination in everyday practice through even greater acceptance
