Municipal climate mitigation (KommMa)

Strengthening Municipal Climate Mitigation Through Innovative Analysis and Planning Tools

Ongoing project - open for funding

That's what it's all about

Every day, local authorities make decisions that directly impact citizens' energy consumption, mobility, environmental impact, and quality of life. They play an indispensable role in initiating sustainable change in areas such as urban planning, transportation, energy supply, waste management, green space design, equal living conditions, and public service security. Given their severely limited financial resources, it is crucial that the chosen measures are effective and efficient. But how can planners identify effective measures? How do measures in different sectors interact? The subject matter is highly complex, developments are dynamic, and decisions are difficult.

What we want to achieve

This is where a new tool being developed at KIT comes in. It is designed to enable municipal climate mitigation officers to assess the impact of selected measures on their municipality's specific situation and highlight interactions with other measures. This will create a significantly improved knowledge base on which more informed decisions can be made.

To further complete the project's database, practical experience is being incorporated into the development and optimization of this innovative tool in close cooperation with municipal and state institutions, as well as energy agencies. However, the landscape of municipal climate mitigation is much more diverse and extensive. To cover this effectively, potential users should continuously be approached and recruited to use the tool. As part of a temporary position (30-50% FTE), the project could hire someone who specializes in promoting the tool and related topics. This will ensure the tool reaches and is used optimally by as many applicable municipalities as possible, effectively contributing to the achievement of their individual climate goals.
