Burn 2 Learn Germany (B2LG) – Inclusive Interval Training Program in Schools

Exercise for Everyone — An Inclusive High-Intensity Interval Training Program for Schools in Germany

Project has not yet begun — open to funding

B2LG is eligible for funding because it empowers children and youth, with and without disabilities, to engage in more physical activity, improve their health, and participate more fully in society — and it provides teachers with long-term training in inclusive sports.

Here's what it's all about

Physical inactivity is a growing global health problem—especially for children and adolescents, and to an even greater extent for people with disabilities. To promote physical activity and health in everyday school life, Burn 2 Learn Germany (B2LG) is adapting an evidence-based Australian school program to the German school context. The program integrates short, intense training sessions (High-Intensity Interval Training, HIIT) lasting 10–15 minutes, two to three times a week, into the school day. The focus is on training teachers, who, as multipliers and supported by additional materials (including a digital platform), take on the responsibility of implementing the program.

This is what we want to achieve

B2LG has a twofold target: to promote more physical activity and better health for students with and without disabilities—while also ensuring sustainability in the supply of qualified teachers for inclusive physical education. The program aims to demonstrate that inclusion in school physical education is not only possible but also effective. By empowering teachers to serve as change agents and through a digital platform, B2LG will have an impact that extends beyond the project’s duration. The training materials developed can be further refined and made available as a standalone professional development program. Successful elements can be incorporated into teacher training programs, such as those for physical education teachers at the IfSS. If the program is successful, expanding it to other countries, federal states, and schools is a realistic possibility. The University of Newcastle implemented the original Burn 2 Learn intervention in New South Wales between 2018 and 2020. This was followed by the implementation of the adapted version of Burn 2 Learn between 2022 and 2023.

The project to revise and reimplement the program in Germany is now seeking funding. The planned duration of the project is 3 years. Partnerships are in place with the University of Newcastle (Australia) and the Pestalozzi School in Rastatt.

Further Information

Phase 1 – Participatory Program Development (Co-Design):
In close collaboration with teachers and students, the Australian program will be adapted to the German school context through workshops. This will result in an initial version of B2LG—including a training module for teachers and a digital HIIT platform—that is tailored to the reality of schools in Germany.
Phase 2 – Pilot Testing and Feasibility Study

B2LG is being tested in collaboration with the Pestalozzi School in Rastatt (a special education and counseling center with inclusive classes). Feasibility, acceptance, and initial indications of effectiveness are being assessed, and the program is being further developed based on these findings.

Phase 3 – Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT):
Several schools with inclusive classes are participating. Intervention and control groups are randomly assigned. The effectiveness of B2LG on physical activity, fitness, and health will be scientifically demonstrated. All schools—including the control group—will receive access to the full program after the study ends (waiting-list design).
